The inception of this blog is a result of two contradictory feelings. On one hand, the writing is fueled by the desire to create a platform which allows me to record insights, observations about my time spent with J and M, and make a conscious and hopefully constructive effort to understand, appreciate and help the boys and have a positive impact on their development.
On the other hand there is the overpowering sense that by creating logs, charting, observing the boys, I will "guinea pig" them, make them the objects of a perverse psychological curiosity, view them under the medical magnifying glass provided by a culture so ready to diagnose, pathologise and drug "patients".
I am skeptical about the chemical salvation we administer each morning and occasionally at night, which is a pill or two a day, but which amounts to at least 480 pills per annum , not counting the other medicine taken for various ailments. In spite of all the records, folders, reports I have seen about the boys , that were written up by various illustrious minds in the domains of child psychology, occupational therapy, I believe that at the core, the problem of these boys cannot be addressed purely on medical terms.
